Users download a freeware software application for Windows or Mac OSX called TVUPlayer and can then watch several dozen TV channels over the internet. TVU does not broadcast these channels, but provides a platform for broadcasters to distribute content online. It is the responsibility of the individual who broadcasts a particular channel on TVU to keep the channel running and ensure that the content can be legally transmitted. It is unknown to the viewer who the broadcaster is. Broadcasts originate from either a large broadcasting company itself, which chooses to provide viewers with its broadcast, or individual broadcasters who create their own content or capture public broadcasts and rebroadcast them on TVU. There is a beta version of TVUPlayer for Mac OS X
